WER/Whole window U value (WwUv) and Building Regulations - what are they and what does it mean?

Building Regulations change in
October 2010! Broadly there are two routes for compliance; windows will be required to achieve:

• Window Energy Rating (WER), minimum ‘C rated’ or

• Whole window U value of 1.6 w/m2k or less

WER

• Mostly used for domestic home improvement installations.

• Method of demonstrating the overall energy performance of a window.

• Minimim C rated is required but you can easily upgrade to a ‘B’ or ‘A’ rated window using a different construction of IGUs.

WwUv

• Used mostly for new build installations.

• More specific, simple measure of the overall energy performance of a window.

• Minimum 1.6 u value is required; even lower u values are possible using a superior construction of glass unit.
